Emotions are a vital part of being human. We cannot consider being healthy and satisfied without having an emotionally honest relationship with ourselves. Often our emotions are repressed, ignored, and judgedâboth by ourselves and others. You might have felt you should have a âstiff upper lip,â not allowing others to really know how you feel because they might feel uncomfortable or not be able to handle it. You may be more concerned with how others will judge you if you arenât acting consistently with the groupâs normal, accepted emotional response.
We are taught to silence our deepest feelings, especially if they express a sad, troubling, or painful emotion. Society, families, and most people in general are uncomfortable dealing with an emotional response that they believe they cannot âfix,â so instead we negate, suppress, or simply ignore it and act like it doesnât matter or bother us. Weâre expectedâby ourselves and othersâto just put on a smile and move on, but trapped emotional pain within our bodies will resurface in some way. It could be through physical symptoms, negative thoughts and behaviors, pathology, or exaggerated emotions that spiral out of control, but it is only a matter of time before those repressed emotions ultimately resurface once again.
We have all heard the expression âmind-body-spirit,â but I strongly believe there is a fourth component, emotion, that needs to be added. When one or more of these four pillars becomes cluttered, negative, or toxic, chemical, hormonal, and physiological changes start to occur that can lead to illness and disease. Emotions are the driving force that fuels all human experiences and helps us navigate our lifeâs journey. Each emotion provides us with valuable information and creates biochemical and physiological responses within our bodies.
Our emotions become the key to unlocking everything about ourselvesâour health, happiness, and the way we behave. As you explore your emotional responses, you need to ensure that your emotions are showing up appropriately for the current situationâwith the correct intensity, at the right time, and specific to the present event. So often our emotional landscape from the past has been ingrained with a specific cause-and-effect mechanism that remains wired and translated into current situations. When you integrate and positively impact all four of these pillars (mind, body, spirit, and emotions), you achieve long-lasting energetic health and happiness. Learning to experience your emotions is the key to healing your broken heart and wounded Soul.
Scientists and medical professionals confirm that stress is the number-one cause of most illnesses and injuries, and I concur that our emotional stress seriously contributes to, and even causes, our diseases. Dr. Kim DâEramo, practicing emergency room physician and author of The Mind Body Tool Kit, states, âAll of our emotions are chemical responses.â DâEramo speaks of how certain emotions (like stress, anxiety, and anger) can cause diabetes, heart disease, obesity, cancer, adrenal fatigue, fibromyalgia, autoimmune disease, and long-term illness. She even states that âCancer comes from some expression of life.
